What people who sew actually say
Short quotations from public sewing communities, each linked to the tool it is about. Sources are named and the answers are shortened, not copied.
My best investment is fabric cutting scissors. Someone said to use them only for cutting fabric, and this is what I have done. They have lasted for thirty years.
You will need at least five seam rippers, because I swear that they evaporate.
Tailor's soap is much better than chalk or markers for marking fabric.
Magnetic trays from the hardware store make the best pincushions.

Five categories, 28 tools
Every tool page carries a specification table, a technical parameter table, compatible fabrics and stitches, and a safety note.
Sewing Machines & Needles
Machines, needles, feet and bobbins. The parts that form the stitch, and the numbers that decide whether it forms cleanly.
Cutting & Measuring
Shears, rotary cutters, mats, rulers and the marking tools that decide how a garment starts life. Cutting is where accuracy is won or lost.
Pressing & Finishing
Irons, hams, clappers and pressing cloths. The half of tailoring that happens away from the machine, and the half that decides how a garment looks.
Fabrics & Notions
Cotton, linen, wool, silk, interfacing, buttons and zips. What the cloth does, and how it behaves once it is on the body.
Tailoring & Fitting
Dress forms, tapes, curves, tracing wheels and weights. The measuring and adjustment tools that turn a pattern into something that fits a body.
The order of work
Four stages, in this order
Sewing goes wrong when the stages are done out of order. Measure and draft first, cut second, sew and press third, fit last.
1
STEP 1Measure & Draft
Take the body measurements, choose the size, and draft or adjust the pattern before any cloth is cut.
2
STEP 2Cut & Mark
Lay the pattern on the grain, weight or pin it, mark the notches and darts, and cut with a sharp blade.
3
STEP 3Sew & Press
Join the pieces with the right needle and stitch, and press each seam as you go rather than at the end.
4
STEP 4Fit & Finish
Try it on, mark the corrections, then finish the seams, hems and closures to a standard that lasts.
3D Studio
Four tools you can change the numbers on
Build a seam, draft a block, reproduce a tension fault, or hang a cloth and watch how it falls. Each one runs in your browser and exports its figures.
Real questions
Answers from the sewing community
Three questions that come up constantly, with the answers the community gives. Each card links to the guide that covers it in full.
“What are the absolute essentials someone needs when they start sewing?”
r/SewingForBeginners
You'll need at least one spool of thread, a pair of scissors and some fabric. Everything else you can pick up when you need it. A comfortable seam ripper, pins and good-quality thread are worth buying early. Do not buy a big box of thread — match the colour to the fabric as you go.
“What am I doing wrong with tension? I can't figure out the right settings.”
r/sewhelp
Completely unthread and rethread the machine from scratch, with the presser foot raised so the tension discs are open. Check the bobbin is in the right way round. A bent or blunt needle, or the wrong size for the fabric, will cause tension problems no matter what the dial says.
“What are your absolute must-haves for sewing?”
r/sewing
Fabric scissors, a rotary cutter with a mat, a comfortable seam ripper and a good pincushion. The clapper is the most underrated tool for flat seams. A tailor’s ham, pattern weights, silk pins and a tailor’s awl are also favourites.
Troubleshooting
Sewing fault quick-reference
The six faults that stop most projects, what actually causes them, and the check to run before you touch a setting.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Quick check | Fix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bobbin thread shows on the top | Upper tension too loose | Is the thread fully seated in the tension discs? | Re-thread with the presser foot raised, then increase the upper tension. | r/sewhelp |
| Loops of thread on the underside | Upper tension too loose, or the machine is unthreaded | Is the thread in the take-up lever? Is the bobbin in the right way? | Re-thread from the spool and check the bobbin direction. | r/sewhelp |
| Thread keeps breaking | Tension too tight, wrong needle, or a rough spot | Is the needle bent or blunt? Is the thread old? | Replace the needle, re-thread, and reduce the tension. | r/sewing |
| Machine will not sew through thick fabric | Needle too fine, stitch too short | Is the needle 90/14 or larger? | Fit a heavier needle, lengthen the stitch, and use the handwheel at the start. | r/sewhelp |
| Skipped stitches on stretch fabric | Wrong needle point for a knit | Is a ballpoint or stretch needle fitted? | Switch to a ballpoint needle and loosen the tension slightly. | r/SewingForBeginners |
| Machine will not pick up the bobbin thread | Needle not fully inserted, or bobbin the wrong way round | Is the needle pushed right up into the clamp? Is the bobbin unwinding correctly? | Re-seat the needle and the bobbin, then re-thread. | r/sewing |

The tool pages people open first.
Sewing Machine
A lockstitch machine, mechanical or computerised, that forms the stitch every other technique on this site is built on.
Fabric Shears
Bent-handle shears that keep the fabric flat on the table while the blade cuts. The tool a tailor buys once and keeps for thirty years.
Steam Iron
The single most important tool in the room after the machine. Heat, moisture and pressure set the shape of a garment.
Serger / Overlock
A three- or four-thread overlock machine that trims, stitches and neatens a seam edge in one pass.
Rotary Cutter
A rolling circular blade that cuts multiple layers at once and needs a mat underneath. Fast, accurate, and unforgiving of fingers.
Needle Set
Universal, microtex, jeans and ballpoint needles, and the size-to-fabric table that decides which one belongs in the machine.
Cotton Fabric
The beginner's fabric: stable, easy to cut, forgiving to sew and simple to press.
Seam Ripper
A small hooked blade for unpicking stitches. You will own several, because they evaporate.
Tailor's Ham
A firmly stuffed curved cushion for pressing seams that are not flat, like darts, sleeve heads and hips.
Calculators
Three free calculators
Fabric quantities, stitch settings and pattern grading. Every figure is computed in your browser.
Fabric Yardage Calculator
Work out how much fabric a garment needs from its type, size, width and pattern repeat, with the waste built in.
Stitch Length & Tension Calculator
Suggest a stitch length, a needle size and an upper tension for a fabric and a stitch type, with a test-seam reminder.
Pattern Size Grading Calculator
Move a pattern up or down one or more sizes and see how much each seam has to move, and when to re-draft instead.
