Fabrics & Notions
Fabric is not a neutral material. The same pattern in cotton and in silk produces two different garments, and the way a cloth drapes, frays, shrinks and presses decides which techniques will work on it. These guides cover the fibres, the weaves and the notions that hold them together.
Cotton Fabric
The beginner's fabric: stable, easy to cut, forgiving to sew and simple to press.
Linen Fabric
A flax fibre with a distinctive slub, superb drape and breathability, and a tendency to crease the moment you move.
Wool Fabric
A protein fibre that tailors like nothing else: it moulds to shape with steam and holds it. Also it shrinks if you treat it badly.
Interfacing
A hidden layer that gives a collar its roll, a buttonhole its strength and a waistband its body. Fusible or sew-in.
Buttons
Two-hole and four-hole buttons, and the shank that lets a button sit over a buttoned band without pulling.
Zippers
Nylon, metal and concealed zips, and the difference between a zip that disappears into a seam and one that is meant to be seen.
